Mining expertise is moving from documents and individual memory into systems that can learn, advise and act. What should engineers become next?
A mine contains thousands of connected decisions. Geologists interpret uncertainty, planners sequence the future, maintainers protect availability and operators respond to conditions that change by the hour. Much of the knowledge behind those decisions still lives in documents, spreadsheets and experienced people’s memories.
From records to reasoning
Digitising a document does not make knowledge alive. A living system connects the current state of the operation with engineering rules, historical outcomes and the decision that must be made now. It can show assumptions, detect conflicts and learn when reality differs from the plan.
This is where AI can become useful. It should not replace accountability, but serve as an intelligence layer across the value chain.
The future engineer will not only solve problems. The engineer will help build systems that solve classes of problems responsibly.
The role of the engineer expands
Domain expertise becomes more important when it must be translated into logic a system can use. Engineers will define boundaries, make uncertainty explicit, judge whether recommendations are safe and redesign work around the new capability.
The strongest professionals will combine technical depth with systems thinking, data literacy and the ability to explain decisions to people.
Trust must be engineered
A system earns operational trust through evidence. Its advice must be traceable. Its performance must be measured against the current way of working. Its failure modes need owners, escalation paths and safe limits.
If we build these foundations, mining knowledge can become more available, more consistent and continuously improving while human responsibility remains clear.
