What should we learn from Elon Musk, and what should we not imitate?
Elon Musk’s story shows the force of ambitious purpose, reasoning from evidence, rapid learning and the discipline to finish difficult work. It also reminds us that exceptional results do not justify every method used to achieve them. We need the judgement to carry forward what is useful and leave behind what harms people.
When I returned to my notes from Ashlee Vance’s biography of Elon Musk, two reactions appeared together. Some passages show how far purpose, endurance and the ability to build can take a person. Others show the excessive price that success can demand from colleagues, relationships and family.
We therefore need neither complete admiration nor complete rejection. The more useful task is to distinguish the principles that produced unusual results from the conduct that was never a necessary condition of those results.
Real learning means selecting what created value without repeating what caused unnecessary harm.
He found a problem large enough to organise his life
As a young man, Musk concluded that the internet, sustainable energy and space would profoundly shape humanity’s future. He did not begin by choosing a title or an employer. He first chose where he wanted to make a difference.
That decision gave coherence to many choices that followed. Digital payments, electric vehicles, solar power and reusable rockets look like separate ventures, but they share a deeper question. What must be built to give humanity a more sustainable future with greater possibility?
Not everyone needs to start a space company. But each of us benefits from finding a problem that will remain worth years of learning and effort. A durable purpose gives meaning to daily work and protects us from following every attractive opportunity.
He tested the word impossible against reality
Musk rarely accepted an industry convention as a final answer. He returned to physics, material cost and engineering detail. If rockets were said to be expensive, he asked what the materials and processes should actually cost when examined piece by piece.
When people argued that a Tesla door would not fit inside a garage, he did not settle for explanation. He took the prototype home and demonstrated it. Colleagues also described his ability to detect an implausible number inside an otherwise polished presentation.
The lesson is not to dismiss expertise. It is to distinguish assumption from fact. The phrase “this is how it is done” sometimes describes a true constraint. At other times, it describes a habit that has survived without being questioned.
Before accepting that something is impossible, ask whether nature forbids it or whether our familiar method is simply in the way.
He used building to accelerate learning
Speed inside Musk’s companies was not only a matter of longer hours. Difficult work was divided, built, tested and corrected in short cycles so that reality could answer sooner.
SpaceX failed in its first three launches. Before the fourth attempt, money, time and confidence were close to exhaustion. Yet every failure had produced specific knowledge for the next vehicle. The team did not merely endure failure. It found the cause and changed the design.
Tesla faced an equally hard reckoning when the projected cost of one vehicle became vastly higher than expected and many components did not work. That evidence forced the company to rethink design, suppliers and production rather than hide behind the original plan.
The point of moving quickly is not haste itself. It is discovering a false assumption early enough to correct it.
He placed his own commitment at risk
Musk reinvested much of the wealth from his early companies into the next ideas. At X.com, Tesla and SpaceX, his own capital, reputation and future were exposed.
That made his demand for commitment more credible. He did not remain entirely protected while asking others to sacrifice.
This is not an argument for risking everything without judgement. Risk must fit one’s knowledge, resilience and responsibilities to family and others. The deeper lesson is that it is difficult to sustain the belief of others when the founder has placed no meaningful commitment behind the mission.
He searched for people who would find a way
SpaceX looked for people who had built things from an early age and who pursued difficult problems without waiting for precise instructions. Musk expected employees to own the outcome and carry the problem through.
Bringing bad news without considering a response was not enough. People were expected to arrive with a possible solution and a next step. Engineers who understood the work were also expected to estimate the schedule rather than accept a date imposed without knowledge of the task.
The valuable principle is responsibility beyond the boundary of a job description. Instead of stepping away with “this is not my work,” the person asks, “how can this be solved?”
But responsibility is not the same as fear. If people are afraid to speak, bad news disappears, problems arrive late and only words pleasing to the leader move upward. Real ownership grows from clear purpose, decision authority, high standards and safety to tell the truth.
He owned the time, cost and smallest detail
Musk asked teams to break plans into days, hours and sometimes minutes. He treated delay, unnecessary process, excess equipment and work that added no value as sources of stagnation.
His attention was not limited to strategy. A visible bolt, one step in production or an inconsistent number in a presentation could attract scrutiny. He understood that large ambitions become real through the quality of small details.
Yet pressure on every minute is not productivity by itself. Good planning brings decisions closer, exposes constraints early and shortens learning. When it creates permanent anxiety, speed begins consuming judgement, health and trust.
He saw several industries as one system
Payments, vehicles, batteries, solar power and space are separate industries. Viewed together, Musk’s work forms a connected picture of energy, transport, technology and humanity’s long term future.
He brought rapid decisions, flatter structures and direct communication from technology into aerospace. Simulation helped reduce physical failures and cost. Practices from one field were used to challenge the inherited model of another.
This lesson matters greatly for Mongolia. Mining, energy, infrastructure, engineering knowledge and artificial intelligence should not be developed as isolated domains. Connected deliberately, they can create new solutions and Mongolian companies that the world needs.
The notes also point toward a broader form of education. Future builders need more than one narrow specialisation. A foundation in engineering and science must be combined with the ability to organise work, understand business, raise capital and lead people.
What should not be imitated?
Some conduct in the biography cannot be defended as high standards. Insults, public humiliation, treating a family event as evidence of weak commitment and normalising permanent exhaustion were not necessary prices of exceptional achievement.
Difficult missions sometimes require sacrifice and intense periods of work. But when emergency becomes the daily operating model, the problem is no longer only personal endurance. It is poor system design. An organisation that repeatedly consumes health, family life and dignity eventually consumes its own capability.
My notes also describe how being treated as a real life Tony Stark increased the pressure on Musk to sustain the image he had created. As fame grows, fewer people may be willing to speak plainly. That is when a leader most needs colleagues brave enough to protect the mission rather than the leader’s self image.
High standards and respect for people are not alternatives. Good leadership carries both.
What I would carry forward
I would carry forward the courage to choose consequential problems, test convention against evidence, build quickly enough to learn, remove needless cost and work, search patiently for capable people and place personal commitment behind the mission.
I would also remember the leadership required after repeated failure. Giving people the confidence to attempt a fourth launch after three failures was not only an engineering act. It was an emotional one.
I would leave behind contempt, the use of exhaustion as proof of loyalty, pride in permanent crisis and the belief that a great purpose excuses harm to people.
The most important question is not whether Mongolia needs another Elon Musk. It is whether we can build globally significant engineering with large ambition and stronger respect for the people doing the work.
Learn from the scale of the mission, the respect for evidence and the discipline to finish. Improve the way people are treated while building something difficult.
